The “1000” Lives comes to Oak Tree What is the campaign? A campaign to save 1000 lives in Wales was launched on 21st April. The 1000 Lives Campaign aims to reduce risks to patient safety by implementing life saving interventions developed by clinicians in Wales. How are we involved? Practices across Bridgend County Borough are supporting a whole health community approach to managing patients taking Warfarin. Innovative approaches towards carrying out blood tests through the use of finger prick testing equipment, the use of computer software to work out how much Warfarin needs to be taken by the patient are being developed with the help of GPs, Practice Nurses, Community Pharmacists, Care Homes, District nurses and Specialists in the hospital. What specifically is Oak Tree doing? Dr Ian Harris is involved at the strategic level and our staff are taking a role in auditing adverse events and ‘near misses’ with regard to Warfarin monitoring in order to develop a safer model of care for our patients.
New Childrens website launched http://www.childrenfirst.nhs.uk/
Nurse appointments change on 1st August Oak Tree has moved from open access to appointments in the afternoons. From 1st August appointments are given for the nurses in the afternoons from 3pm and a proportion will be bookable in advance. Nurse Manager Ailsa John explained " On average the nurses were seeing 32 people per afternoon however this has increased in the past year and to avoid increased waiting times for Patients the surgery has agreed to look at an appointments system for the afternoons". She stressed that this will not affect the morning open access or walk in service. " We hope to utilise our excellent Health Care Assistants more, who have been trained to deal with things like ear syringing and blood pressures can be measured without patients seeing the Nurses." The surgery will be monitoring the new system over the first 3 months to make sure that patients are benefiting from the new approach.
Oak Tree to build on success of Health Days Oak Tree will continue with its initiative around human papillomavirus (HPV) and its link to cervical cancer. To help protect young women in the area who may otherwise miss out on the benefits of the HPV immunisation programme set to start in schools in September 2008, the surgery will provide education and advice as well as HPV vaccination to girls and women aged 16 – 26 years old. Over 325 women have so far had the vaccine and been advised as to the benefits of early protection from the Health days in January and May. If you are unsure as to when you need your next injection in the course of 3 please contact the surgery. Any Young Women over the age of 14 can have the vaccine now rather than wait for the catch up campaign if they wish. Please phone the surgery after 11 am for an appointment with the nursing team at one of our clinics.
We will be monitoring the success of the schools programme for 12 and 13yr olds in October. We will be changing to the Cervarix vaccine from that date for new 1st Dose patients.
Next Clinics 7th and 14th October You can also drop in and see the nurse in the morning or make an appointment for any afternoon with the nurse team.
